About the Opportunity
We are recruiting on behalf of a well-established mining and civil contracting organisation operating in Tanzania for an experienced General Manager – Mining & Quarry Operations.
This is a senior leadership position with responsibility for a strategically important limestone quarry operation supplying a major cement producer in East Africa.
The successful candidate will provide overall strategic, operational, commercial and people leadership across the operation, with a strong focus on health and safety, production performance, cost control, client relationships, governance and long-term operational improvement.
We are looking for a highly experienced, hands-on leader who is equally comfortable engaging with Board-level stakeholders and working closely with operational teams on site.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide overall leadership for mining and quarry operations including drilling, blasting, loading, hauling, crushing and limestone quality management.
- Ensure achievement of agreed production, safety, operational and financial targets.
- Lead and strengthen health, safety and risk management across the operation.
- Drive a proactive safety culture through visible leadership and regular site engagement.
- Improve equipment utilisation, operational discipline, productivity and overall performance.
- Develop and manage annual budgets, forecasts and cost optimisation initiatives.
- Identify opportunities to improve profitability, contract performance and operational efficiency.
- Act as the principal senior interface with client leadership and key stakeholders.
- Lead operational review meetings and ensure contractual obligations are consistently achieved.
- Provide accurate and transparent weekly and monthly reporting to the Board.
- Monitor and report on production, finance, HSE, equipment performance, staffing and strategic risks.
- Lead continuous improvement and operational excellence initiatives.
- Support the implementation of digital reporting tools, dashboards, KPI systems and operational data management solutions.
- Develop, mentor and strengthen local management teams.
- Establish succession plans and support long-term localisation of leadership capability.
- Maintain strong relationships with regulators, labour representatives and other relevant stakeholders.
- Develop long-term strategies to support safe, profitable and sustainable quarry operations.
Required Experience
Candidates should have:
- A minimum of 15 years’ experience within mining, quarrying or related heavy industrial operations.
- At least 10 years’ experience in senior operational leadership or General Management positions.
- Strong experience within one or more of the following:
- Limestone quarrying
- Cement operations
- Aggregates
- Large-scale open-pit mining
- Proven experience managing large multidisciplinary teams.
- Strong commercial, financial and contractual management capability.
- Demonstrable experience managing budgets, operating costs and profitability.
- Experience working directly with senior executives, shareholders or Board stakeholders.
- Strong client relationship and stakeholder management experience.
- Previous experience working in Africa or expatriate environments would be highly advantageous.
- Experience implementing operational improvement, reporting systems or digital transformation initiatives would be advantageous.
Qualifications
- Degree in Mining Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
- Relevant postgraduate qualifications would be advantageous.
- Professional memberships and industry certifications would be beneficial.

A competitive USD-denominated executive remuneration package will be offered, commensurate with experience and suitability for the role.
